Sarah K Chen Photography Blog bio picture

Welcome to my Blog!

If I love doing something, there’s nothing in the world that will stop me from doing it. Case in point: I grew up drawing on the walls of my house, much to the chagrin of my parents, who had to repaint the interior before they could sell it. Though I no longer use crayons to express myself, I still have that passion today for creating beautiful images.

I now use a camera to capture what would otherwise be fleeting moments between two people sharing in the excitement of beginning a new life together. There is little else that can evoke such strong emotion and bring back cherished memories as a well-composed photo, and I aim to capture just that with each one I take. I want my images to hold a special place in your heart for years to come.

I feel honored to be present at such a significant time in my clients’ lives and hope you’ll invite me to become part of yours, too.

Happy New Year!

I’m finally back in town and back to reality! The time off spent with family and friends was much needed and flew by in the blink of an eye. My parents got to spend a lot of time with their grandchildren, Ellie got to meet her cousin (my twin brother’s baby) for the first time,  we all got to spend some time in Vegas visiting lots of relatives, and my sister in law and I got to partake in lots of shopping excursions! In between all that I also shot two engagement sessions in San Francisco with two super cute couples of mine! All in all, it was a fantastic little break for us.

My family celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve since my parents worked Christmas Day.  With nothing better to do, we drove up to San Francisco and spent some time in Golden Gate Park on Christmas day and then had lunch at some yummy Korean restaurant in the city.

Ellie loves to hold on to your hands and run all over the place happily screeching the entire way.

Ellie’s not really sleeping. She blinked, but it looks like she’s sleeping doesn’t it? So cute! Don’t hate on our matching jackets. LOL!

I have a bunch of sessions to blog so watch out for those! And in the mean time I’ll be doing my best to get through the mountain of emails I received while on vacation! Thanks for your patience!

Out of Office

I know I’ve been a bad blogger lately, but it was crazy busy for me these past few months. I thought I’d have some time to relax and spend time with my family towards the tail end of this year, but that so did not happen! Life’s funny that way. Funny, as in sometimes I want to drop kick it in the nuts. LOL! Anyways, I’m currently in the Bay Area. I bravely insanely made the long drive with Ellie by myself yesterday in the pouring rain. Ellie did pretty well although she did have a little meltdown on the 152. Have you all been on the 152? There are NO EXITS! I kept shushing and driving and praying for an exit and one never came. I had to just pull over on the side of the highway and pull Ellie into the front seat with me and let her pretend the drive to calm her down. Then she had to push every single button possible on the wheel and dash. Then she pounded on the window and yelled at each of the cars that whooshed by us. Fun times!

Anyways, I have two engagement shoots in San Francisco, then I’m going to Las Vegas to celebrate my Aunt’s 70th birthday, and then will be spending the rest of the holidays back here in the Bay Area with my family. I’ll be back in the office January 4, 2010.

Someone asked about Akira and she’s doing good considering that she’s had to adjust to having a mobile baby afoot all the time. She’s pretty nonchalant with Ellie in that she’ll just lay there and watch Ellie crawl around. If Ellie gets within touching distance, Akira will swiftly move away. Akira’s always been more aloof that most dogs which I think is a common trait in Akitas. She likes to be nearby, but doesn’t want you hanging all over her. Like a cat. We have a 50+ lb cat-dog. But our cat dog is soon to be semi famous. A book publisher purchased one of my photos of Akira as a puppy for their book cover. Cool, huh?

Jeannine & Matt’s Wedding in Santa Barbara, Ca

Jeannine and Matt had such a fun filled wedding day with the most adorable, well thought out details. It really showed off their individuality and style and I enjoyed capturing every single moment of their wedding day.

We were greeted with lots of little Tiffany blue boxes as we entered the suite where Jeannine and her girls got ready. These gorgeous gems were gifts from Matt to Jeannine on their wedding day. Love the color and all those facets! And who can say no to little blue boxes?

IMG_1071

Jeannine wore bright pink heels which popped under her dress.

01

I loved all the details from the small ceramic dish to the little jar of honey which is Jeannine’s favorite word. :)

04

And of course, Jeannine also a Tarina Tarantino hair flower to wear for the reception. Love the pop of bright, happy yellow!

The Pavillion Art Center was just a short walk away from the hotel so everyone went on foot and it caused a big stir with the motorists who gleefully honked and congratulated the couple from their open car windows.

The reception details were awesome! I loved how they incorporated their color scheme to make everything so bright and fun.

IMG_4582

12

If you know Jeannine, she loves all things Hello Kitty and so it’s only fitting that their cupcake topper was a Badtz Maru and Hello Kitty!

Ellie’s First Birthday Bash

All summer long, friends and family members were asking me if I had started planning Ellie’s first birthday yet. In Korean culture, this first birthday is quite an extravaganza which we call a Dohl and calls for much planning. Planning which I had no time for. So my answer was always a guilt laden, no, not yet. I was busy, busy, busy and while I had a few ideas roaming in my head, that’s as much planning as I had gotten done. The planning in my head.

Then I met Linda Ly of Grand Soiree’s at a networking picnic. I remember she was very pregnant, so easy going that I felt like I’d known her all my life, and that she had nonchalantly offered to plan the event for me. I was floored!

And so it began.

My only requirements were that it be outdoors, we include some pink in the color scheme, and I wanted a flag banner. When she asked me about a theme, I told her I didn’t really want a theme per se, more so an over all look. And that look happened to be the look of my favorite retail shop – Anthropologie. A week or so later I received an 8 page detailed pdf (with drawings!) of the entire event laid out and designed by Linda and got so giddy with excitement that I could hardly contain myself! Ellie’s birthday bash was going to be amazing! Or as Jeff likes to put it, like a mini wedding.

A big huge thank you goes out to Linda of Grand Soiree for dreaming up such an amazing event for our baby girl.

My dear girlfriends who came over once a week to help craft all the DIY stuff for Ellie’s party.

Cory who catered the event with so much delicious food that we still haven’t made a dent in the leftovers.

Melody of Sweet and Saucy Shop for her delectable and gorgeous cake, famous red velvet cupcake lollipops, and mini cheesecakes.

Carissa of JL Designs for the gorgeous, lush florals (in milk glass!) she created for us.

Ace, Crystal and Ming for photographing the event. Their photos are the ones below.

Now on to the pictures!

Linda dreams BIG. She took my Anthropologie theme and ran with it to the moon and back. She dreamed up a boxed invitation with retail like packaging. Outer mailing box, inner box wrapped with twine nestled in with pink shredded paper, a custom logo for Ellie’s name on the inner box, gocco’d vellum with backing, and then a catalog style invitation wrapped in tissue paper and sealed with a custom sticker with Ellie’s logo on it.

25

Ellie’s logo was gocco’d onto the box in whisper pink ink and then embossed with pink powder.

29

Each 8 page invitation/catalog was wrapped in tissue paper and sealed with an Ellie sticker.

27

When Linda and I met up with Melody of Sweet and Saucy, we brought along a copy of Ellie’s invitations for inspiration. I trusted in her talents completely and let her imagine something up for Ellie’s main cake and I have to say that I LOVE what she created. The bottom layer was her famous candy bar creation : white cake with a layer of chocolate and a layer of peanut butter cream. The top layer was pumpkin cake with a cinnamon cream accent. Just perfect for a winter celebration. On the right we have her famous red velvet cake lollipops covered in white chocolate. *cake image removed by request.

01_new

The pink sugar flower she created was so beautiful!

The mini cheesecakes topped with raspberries. The dessert table was such a hit with our guests and their kiddies.

10

Linda created the logo and the backdrop for our dessert table. Isn’t is so cute?

03_new

My favorite flower in the world! Big, lush, vibrant coral peonies created by Carissa of JL Designs. Aren’t they to die for?

05

Sparkling raspberry lemonade for the guests. Linda found these awesome gray and white striped straws to go with our color scheme. So perfect! And talk about an attention to detail, all the straws are pointing the same direction. Loved that!

11

13

We also created die cut felt hair pins for our female guests and pin on boutennieres for the guys.

04

09

14

Along with the two large tables, Linda had custom yellow and gray picnic blankets sewn and laid out on the grass for families to relax and eat on.

16

We made custom party hats for the kiddies. The girls’ hats had a pink “E” in the center while the boy hats had a blue “1.”

06

My parents bought Ellie her hanbok in Korea when they were there last month for my niece’s dohl. It’s so cute! Normally, Ellie hates having anything on her head and will tear off all hats, hair pins and hoodies. I think with all the hustle and bustle of her party, she promptly forgot about it and wore it the entire time without a fuss.

35

39

21

We played who-can-throw-their-baby-highest-in-the-air game. Just kidding. We didn’t. But it doesn’t matter, Trystan and his daddy would have won it anyways. Photos by his mommy Connie.

23

Here’s little Brandon modeling the custom birthday hat for everyone. And the picture on the right cracks me up. Just had to include it.

34

We also had a bunny and hen petting zoo for the kids. The bunnies were so sweet and so cute! Check out this angora bunny! When he hopped around he looked like a big mop.

18

And the prize winning velveteen rabbit. Ok, not sure what breed this rabbit is, but I was told that it’s the same bunny as the velveteen rabbit. And for good reason, his coat was so lush and soft. And he was such a sweet little guy, letting everyone pet him.

07

22

And to the horror of these two girls, they showed up to Ellie’s party wearing the same dress! How embarrassing.

19

37

Did I mention there was cotton candy? I can’t even say that this is for Ellie as we don’t really allow her any sweets at this age, but Mommy sure does love her some spun sugary goodness! Here’s Cory our caterer with a big tray full of sticky goodness! We also had hot funnel cake and berry cobblers baked right inside of mini mason jars. I don’t think anyone got a picture of them because they disappeared so darn fast. But let me tell you, they were YUMMY! I was able to snag one of the pies and eat it the following day after heating it up and it was to. die. for!

24

And then it was time for Ellie to change back into her Burberry dress to blow out her candle. She was quite mesmerized by the sparkler on her cake.

17

20

I love kissing Ellie’s cheeks. Actually, I love kissing all babies’ cheeks. They’re so soft and squishy and kissable!

38

15_new

Happy birthday, my dear Ellie. Your first year of life seems to have flown by in a blink of an eye. You bring so much joy into our lives and Mommy and Daddy love and adore you so so so much. We can’t wait to see what this next year with you holds for us all.

Paula & Michael’s Wedding at the Hilton Hotel

Paula and Michael married on a beautiful day on the rooftop of the San Gabriel Hilton Hotel in front of their dearest family and friends. I loved the vibrant fall colors that they chose for their day and all the little details they thought up!

I started off with Paula and she had so many wonderful details for me to shoot. I loved her dress, her shoes, her jewelry, everything was perfection.

IMG_4653

Their gorgeous rings. I just had to post both!

I love the image on the left showcasing the low row of buttons down the back of her dress. Such a classic!

I saw this little girl after the ceremony sitting and blowing bubbles and couldn’t resist a quick picture. I think I’m in love. The windswept hair, totally oblivious to me as she’s so caught up with the bubble wand, her long lashes and those cheeks! I’m such a sucker for baby cheeks!

10

Their candy buffet was such a hit, I don’t think it lasted more than 10 minutes. Seriously.

Jessica & Curt’s Wedding at Marvimon House

Jessica and Curt married in one of the most beautiful and unique weddings I’ve ever had the pleasure to capture and witness. It was a day filled with laughter, tears of joy, and a whole lot of love and care from family and friends. I loved all the details and sweet moments captured on their day.

We started off at The Standard  hotel in downtown Los Angeles for the getting ready pictures. Jessica opted for a short, swingy dress and a pair of purple ostrich leather Michael Kors heels that were so fab!

01

There was a little bubbly for the girls to enjoy while they all got ready together.

IMG_2999

IMG_3086

Jessica did her own makeup for the big day and it turned out beautifully!

02

The bridesmaids all wore a different dress in the same color and their heel of choice so that their individuality could shine.

03

IMG_3020

Jesi not only coordinated this entire event, she also did the florals which were beyond amazing. I don’t think there’s anything this girl can’t do!

IMG_2985

IMG_3055

A few finishing touches and then Jessica was ready to see Curt.

IMG_1476

We headed over to Union Station for their first look and portraits. I’d done quite a few engagement sessions here, but it was my first time doing a session with a bride and groom and I have to say it was so much fun and so fitting for their retro cool style. Here’s a quick portrait I got of Jessica as we waited for Curt to arrive.

11

This is my other favorite shot. I love their shoes, the socks, the short hem of her dress… it just works!

We were also able to sneak into this side area for some portraits as well. I loved the grand space, the light, and the fact that we had the space all to ourselves.

34

Jessica and Curt made their ceremony unique by asking their loved ones to share something about them as a couple. It really was a joining of families and loved ones and such a great way of including everyone in on their union.

IMG_3561

Loved their dessert table set up! So festive and yummy looking wouldn’t you say?

32

Their first dance as husband and wife was so sweet.

IMG_4210

IMG_4177

Rather than have a traditional guest sign in book, the two opted for a “kissing booth” where guests could apply lipstick, kiss the mirror and then leave their well wishes for the husband and wife. It was such a hit, even with the guys! I’d never seen to many men willingly and excitedly don bright red lips to partake in the fun!

36

Jessica and Curt opted for a low key cake cutting as their guests mingled and enjoyed themselves. I caught this of the two of them outside together sharing a piece of Melody’s of cake.

IMG_4276

IMG_4283

To say the dessert table was a hit would be an understatement. Every treat was so delish!

Angela & Derek’s Wedding at Estancia La Jolla, Ca

Angela and Derek’s wedding was held at the beautiful Estancia La Jolla on a perfect summer day. We had blue skies, bright colors, and a mix of modern and old world backdrops to shoot against. It all made for such a gorgeous day!

SoCal Photog Shootout – San Clemente, Ca

Earth, Wind and Fire. Leading one of the Photog Shootout groups last night was a blast. I got to see old friends, meet a bunch of new ones and come home with some amazing images and inspiration from none other than Joe Photo. The theme for my group was earth, wind and fire. The fire coming from the stunningly gorgeous red headed Lindsey Addie who was gracious enough to run around barefoot, climb trees, lay on dirt, and well, pretty much anything we asked of her. I love her. To my new friends, it was great meeting you all! Hope to find you on Facebook or Twitter! :)

SoCal Photog Shootout – Oct 13 in San Clemente, CA

When Hanssie from Photog Shootout asked me lead a group at the next SoCal Photog Shootout, I was over the moon excited (and a bit nervous too)! I get so many emails from people asking for tips, mentoring sessions, help, advice, etc. I try my best to answer them all, but when I’m super busy (which is the story of my life these days) it’s really hard to answer all them all. So if you’ve registered for the event, please feel free to join my group and ask me your questions or ask me for tips in person! I’d love to help out in any way possible. I just hope there’s no public speaking involved…. it totally gives me horrid flashbacks from Speech class in middle school!

I believe the event sold out in 2 hours, but if you’d like to be wait listed you can do that HERE.
